The new look is the most significant change from my short time with it. If you plan to put a case on your device, that doesn’t matter much. But it shows that Samsung is doing more to bring its high-end and low-end gadgets closer together. That could be important if Samsung wants to catch up to Google’s Pixel 6A, which I said in my review might be the best-looking phone in its price range.
The new look of the Galaxy A54 5G
The Galaxy A54 5G looks and feels more expensive than last year’s Galaxy A53 because it has a new shiny finish. The matte lines and glossy back remind me of the iPhone 11, which is a good thing.
You’ll also notice that the Galaxy A54 5G doesn’t have a bump for the camera. Samsung took it out and put in a moving camera setup like the one on the Galaxy S23 line. This made the phone look cleaner and more uniform. Even though looks aren’t the most important thing about a phone, it’s great to see one that costs less than $500 but doesn’t feel cheap. Regarding style, it seems like Samsung is taking a page from Google’s book. The Pixel 6A, which costs $450 and is a cheaper version of the Pixel 6, has the same shiny finish. Like the Galaxy A54 5G, the Pixel 6A has a camera that looks like the one on its more expensive brother.
The Galaxy A54 5G screen is 6.4 inches, smaller than the Galaxy A53 5G, which is 6.5 inches. I’ve always thought this size is an excellent middle ground between the 6.1-inch Galaxy S23 and the 6.6-inch Galaxy S23 Plus, and the Galaxy A54 is no different.
Samsung fixed one of my biggest problems with the Galaxy A53 by focusing more on its appearance with the Galaxy A54. I specifically said that the Galaxy A53’s style wasn’t “new” or “interesting,” so I’m glad that’s changed this time.
The Galaxy A53 sometimes ran slowly, which was another thing I didn’t like about it. The Exynos 1380 chip in the Galaxy A54 5G is newer than the Exynos 1280 chip found in the Galaxy A53. I last used the Galaxy A54 5G a short time ago to know if this new chip makes a big difference. But in the short time I used it, everything worked fine. The main change between the A54 and S23 is the camera.
Samsung’s cheaper A-series phones and its more expensive S-series phones are very different. But the camera setup is still the most important one. The Galaxy A54 5G has a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 5-megapixel closeup camera. On the other hand, the Galaxy S23 has a primary camera with 50 megapixels, an ultrawide camera with 12 megapixels, and a zoom camera with 10 megapixels. Even though the primary camera and the ultrawide camera sound the same on paper, I wouldn’t be surprised if the picture quality differed. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip in the S23 line, which has been optimized for Samsung’s Galaxy phones, probably significantly impacts how pictures are processed.
You also can’t use Samsung’s Expert Raw app on the Galaxy A54 5G, which camera fans should remember. Still, the Galaxy A54 5G’s camera is just what you’d expect from a phone at this price point.
